United Way South Africa (UWSA), in partnership with Cummins Africa Middle-East (Pty) Ltd, developed a bespoke ‘Youth Success’ programme for Grade 9 pupils in two schools within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. These schools are Ivory Park Secondary School and Ingqayizivele High School.
The project’s objective is to equip learners with the knowledge, experiences and tools which are required to make informed curriculum subject choices, improve their grades and clearly understand the requirements needed to access higher education and career opportunities.
Together with Cummins, we have developed three targeted interventions in order to reach our goal:
1. Skills Assessment
We conduct a Skills Assessment on all Grade 9 learners in order to unearth the strengths of each learner, align those strengths to potential careers and ultimately equip the learners with the knowledge to make informed subject choices.
2. Career Fair
We host a Career Day at each school in order to showcase the skills, attitude and aptitude required to become successful in any given career.
3. Holiday and Weekend Tuition
We conduct ‘Holiday and Weekend Tuition Classes’ in order to improve the performance of academically challenged learners in Grade 9.
It is the second year since the intervention of the ‘Holiday and Weekend Tuition Classes’ and we will continue to make an impact in the communities we live in because that is what it means to Live United.
On the 9th February 2019, we will officially launch the ‘Holiday and Weekend Tuition Classes’ at both schools with the aim to introduce the project to the learners and parents/guardians. These classes have proved to better the performance of academically challenged Grade 9 learners - assisting them to improve in Maths, Science, and English.
Equipping the youth with such dynamic education at an early age will have a massive impact on their future and also to the lives of those around them.
Join us and help change lives in our communities, you can GIVE, ADVOCATE, VOLUNTEER.
