If there is one celebration that was fully embraced, it has to be Heritage Month - September.
South Africans have truly recognised the importance of cultural diversity in shaping their national identity and fostering a sense of unity and belonging. So many colourful events and functions took place mainly to remind us that:
'It is in the roots, not in the branches, that a tree's greatest strength lies.'
United Way South Africa celebrated with Ikamva Youth on Saturday.
Guests were dressed in different traditional outfits. Various indigenous and traditional foods were sold. Hmm, from home-made delicacies to tantalizing dessert. It was fantastic!
The Executive Director of United Way ZA, Queen Mokonoto spoke about Diversity and Inclusion:
'When people from different backgrounds come together, different races, genders, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, visible and invisible disability classes etc. That is diversity. Travelling and visiting other countries too, being exposed to different cultures, helps us remove stereotypes and encourages inclusivity.'
Mrs. Mokonoto also encouraged people to travel South Africa, other African countries and overseas - to get exposure to different people, cultures and traditions.
24th of September is Heritage Day in South Africa, moreover, the entire September is Heritage Month.
