Nelson Mandela International Day (or Mandela Day) is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on 18 July (Mandela's birthday).
Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact.
"Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We're asking you to start with 67 minutes."
"We would be honoured if such a day can serve to bring together people around the world to fight poverty and promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity," according to a statement issued on Mandela's behalf.
What Can You do this Mandela Day?
1. Time & Treasure
Employees are encouraged to collect identified items and drive by the office where collection bins will be set up. Without leaving the safety of their car, they can drop off their donations and exit the premises.
Drive through Office Campaigns: Collection Drives, which includes:
- Blanket Drive for homeless people & cancer patients
- Food Hamper drive for youth at risk and child headed households
- Sanitary Towel and Toiletry Drive for women at risk
- Bra Drive for Oncology Units in Johannesburg
- Inspirational messages and gift hampers for the elderly and frontline workers

2. Cook from Home Challenge
UWSA challenges volunteers to help address issues faced by our people during the COVID19 pandemic.
The challenge is:
- Cook a pot of hot soup (must serve at least 50 people) in the comfort of your home.
- Make 50 packed sandwiches.
- Drivers will drop off ingredients and collect for distribution.
3. Medical Pack
Not everyone has access to over-the-counter medical supplies during this pandemic, especially those in quarantine
You can show your support by donating a medical care hamper that includes:
- 1 pack of Panado
- 1 bottle of ACC200
- 1 pack of Vitamin D
- 1 pack of Zinc
- 1 pack of Vitamin C (1000mg)
- 1 bottle of Vicks
- 1 bottle of Eucalyptus Oil
Total cost for a pack = R 550
