“Cyclone Idai has provoked a massive disaster in Southern Africa – affecting hundreds of thousands if not millions of people, ”according to the United Nations (UN).
The region has been hit by widespread flooding; affecting Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. These three countries are still coming to terms with the immediate impact and aftermath of the storm, a week after it made landfall on the Southeast Coast of Africa. An estimated 1, 6 million people are believed to be affected. Towns and villages remain swamped, and the death toll in the three countries has surpassed 500.
This is said to be one of the worst weather-related disasters ever to hit the southern hemisphere.
United Way South Africa, together with Gift of the Givers, are trying to aid in relief efforts.
You too can help by contributing towards much needed funds!
Currently, the critical elements where urgent financial support is needed:
- Search & Rescue.
- Medical Relief.
- Humanitarian Aid.
- Helping rebuild infrastructure in particular repairing the only hospital in Beira, where all theatres have ground to a halt due to damage.
